A young girl of only 11 years old sat in her 6th grade history class when the assistant principal's voice came over the intercom telling all teachers to turn on the news. She watched haunting images of towers crumbling down, people jumping from great heights to escape the smoldering flames, & felt a tear fall down her cheek as the death toll began to rise. The entire student body of the small country school she attended, solemnly circled the flagpole in the center of campus & participated in prayers and a moment of silence. That girl who though "war" was something that only existed in other countries & history books, that girl who had no idea what a terrorist was, that girl who somehow knew deep down inside that everything was about to change, was me.
Reflecting back to that point in my life, it's hard to imagine what life is like without the gloomy cloud of war & terror shadowing my life. War is real. Terrorism is real. Deployment is real. I was very much affected by September 11, 2001 but even more so now that I'm a military wife. Witnessing such a horrific attack on U.S. soil & seeing my country come together for a common cause is something that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I am PROUD to be the wife of a sailor & I am PROUD to be an American! God bless the USA!
